Sexual harassment in academic institutions in West Africa has been an issue that surfaces in the public sphere every now, however, it is largely under-reported and swept under the carpet as quickly as it comes.
Recently, BBC Africa released an explosive documentary on sexual harassment in West Africa. After gathering dozens of testimonies, BBC Africa Eye sent undercover journalists posing as students inside the University of Lagos and the University of Ghana.
Female reporters were sexually harassed, propositioned and put under pressure by senior lecturers at the institutions – all the while wearing secret cameras.
Reporter Kiki Mordi, who knows first-hand how devastating sexual harassment can be, reveals what happens behind closed doors at some of the region’s most prestigious universities.

Grown up like you, Dr. Paul Kwame Butakor begging to be a side guy, hmm when you're supposed to be a mentor. Misplaced responsibilities. This practice must stop #SexForGrades pic.twitter.com/c1X1b05Zlz— Scholar Israel (@Scholarfiawo) October 7, 2019
In 2003, Idris Abdulkareem released the song "Mr Lecturer",drawing attention to the menace of lecturers sexually exploiting students for grades.
It is 2019 and the problem still remains.Hopefully,BBC's #SexForGrades documentary and the fear of body cameras will put an end to it.— Kelvin Odanz (@MrOdanz) October 7, 2019
Because those lecturers don’t just target and harass their female students. They harrass their female colleagues, junior colleagues, non-teaching staff… it’s about the power #SexforGrades— Kuukuwa Manful (@Kuukuwa_) October 7, 2019
A lecturer made my life a living hell from year one till I left. Final year, he called me to his office and told me he was preparing me to be the woman I had become and that he has to reap the fruits of his labor. Told me I won't graduate if I didn't yield. #SexForGrades
