WIZKID-These are the people really 'hurting' Starboy and his career

So the past few days have seen Wizkid being dragged across social media for his decision to claim to have consistently organized and performed at free concerts for his fans.

When your favorite star is wrong, you do him more good by calling out his bullshit, and pushing him in the right direction.

Pulse first alerted the world to this claim in an interview with DJ Semtex, a British DJ, whose video you can watch below. Wizkid not only claimed to have organized random, sporadic free shows as a means of giving back to the society, he also laid claims to numerous low budget concerts which he can charge between $1 (N390) to N1000.

As it is with all things Wizkid, the reaction came from both sides of the coin. There were the negative revelers who were just happy to join the bandwagon of criticism that Wizkid was duly receiving. Then there the truly mortified people who just deeply felt that Wizkid was doing the nation, himself, and the continent a great disservice by lying.

Finally, the followers came out strong to fight for their overlord. Every big artist has fans and followers. The fans embrace the art, and elements of the musician’s brand that can generate value to their lives. They focus on the art, and what they can get from the artist to enrich their moments. They listen to the music, buy the merch, attend the concerts, and you know, watch the interviews because it is an extension of the art.
But the followers are the real problem. Followers are the mass of people who have moved away from the music and all its extensions into being fixated on the brand. These people have lost their objectivity, and have made Wizkid their idol and deity. To these followers Wizkid is a god and he is perfect. He is beyond reproach, and anyone who dares to criticize him, or point out his errors are blasphemers.

As a superstar, it’s okay for these things to happen. The feeling of invincibility that comes with immense fame is equal to that gotten from controlled substances. This feeling can lead people to do things, say things, and act in ways that they feel cannot be held and perused by everyone.
In the end, all that matters for Wizkid is to give us some more music. It has been three years since he pulled off his sophomore album. And although a lot has happened for him, he is yet to represent that in a body of work that fully captures this growth.

This is 2017. Wizkid already has a deal signed with RCA Records to get the album out, and he is working really hard to ensure that he records with international acts, clear the records, and craft his album. He is looking to drop the project next month, and everyone can agree that if he gets it right, he will be pushing for immortality.
He has to focus on that, and work his ass off to work on that project.
And as for the followers who are constantly encouraging their idol, even when he clearly is in the wrong, you guys need to take a hard look at yourselves and come to the realization that the only reason why you have gotten far in life is because of the presence of a figure who holds you accountable for your actions.

These figures prod you in the right direction, and call out your bullshit when it happens. Journalists and critics are not the only ones with this responsibility. It should come from you guys, because you are the ones with an emotional interest in Wizkid. If he fails, it is bad for you. If he succeeds it is a holiday in your heart.
When your favorite star is wrong, you do him more good by calling out his bullshit, and pushing him in the right direction. That way you aren’t just a parasite, you become a true helper of your favorite idol.
