UPDATE - FIFA 22's top 22 rated players confirmed as Lionel Messi edges out Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi has retained his best player in the world status on FIFA 22 following his transfer to PSG as

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo is forced down into third place

Lionel Messi has been rated above both Cristiano Ronaldo and Robert Lewandowski to claim the best player in the world status yet again on FIFA 22.

The Barcelona icon has not suffered in terms of his overall rating since joining PSG, retaining his 93 ranking as Ronaldo slips from 92 to 91 after leaving Juventus to rejoin Manchester United.

That comes as Lewandowski climbed from 91 up to 92, forcing CR7 into third spot, with Kevin De Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Jan Oblak handed the same rating as Ronaldo.

Only four other players have been ranked in the 90s by EA Sports, with Premier League heavyweights Harry Kane and N'Golo Kante joined by German stoppers Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

EA Sports say of their ratings : "The Ratings Collective is a talent scouting network with a passion for The World’s Game.

"From sprint speed to finishing, passing accuracy to stamina, they meticulously watch what happens on the pitch to assess, judge, and evaluate players across more than 30 attributes that define a footballer’s skill level.

"Their assessments come together to create the FIFA Ratings – the authoritative ranking of over 17,000 players’ footballing ability

With Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, Gianluigi Domnnarumma of PSG and Karim Benzema of Real Madrid all one lower on 89, there are eight more players in the EA Sports top 22.

Joshua Kimmich of Bayern Munich is joined by Son Heung-min of Tottenham, with Liverpool stars Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Sadio Mane also on 89.

Also on the preliminary list are Benzema's club team-mates Casemiro and Thibaut Courtois.

Fans have already begun debating the overall ratings, with many pointing towards the fact that Ronaldo won the Serie A golden boot last season and scored twice on his Premier League return.

One said: "Lewandowski rated higher than Ronaldo tells you everything about these ratings. Absolutely ridiculous."

With a second adding: "Ronaldo was the top scorer in both Serie A and Euro 2020, how the heck do you downgrade him!?"

A third continued: "How is Kane up to 90 but Salah, Mane and Alisson got downgraded? What has Kane achieved over those 3?"

With a fourth saying: "Ronaldo downgrade you know, do yous watch football?"
