WWE SummerSlam 2019 Results: Winners, Grades

Things got off to a slow start in Toronto at the
Scotiabank Arena for SummerSlam 2019, but midway through the card, WWE began to deliver the goods.
Seth Rollins won back the Universal title in a memorable and entertaining main event when he defeated Brock Lesnar via pinfall.
The frog splash through the table was the biggest spot of the evening, and it was executed perfectly. Aside from Lesnar's normal lack of diversity in his moveset, this one was booked well.

I gave it only a B+ grade because I'm otherwise tired of watching Rollins and Lesnar feud. Hopefully, this is the end of that program.
Here are the results and grades for all of the matches on the card.
Results and Grades
  • (c) Drew Gulak def. Oney Lorcan - Retains WWE Cruiserweight Championship - Grade B
  • Gulak is a different kind of cruiserweight champion.
His mat-wrestling style has a place in the division that usually features high flyers. I thought the match was solid, but not memorable. Unfortunately, that's probably the way I'd describe Gulak as a performer overall.
    • Buddy Murphy def. Apollo Crews by DQ - Grade D
I have no idea what is being done with Murphy. I believe this is the first time he's been in the ring since being called up from 205 Live. He is a heck of a performer, but this matchup was boring.
  • I appreciated Rowan interfering and destroying Murphy for mentioning him in the attacks on Roman Reigns.
However, everything else was less than entertaining.
    • (c) Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross def. The IIconics - Retains the Women's Tag-Team Championship - Grade B-
I like Bliss and Cross as a team, and I love the IIconics as characters. This little feud lacks a bit of flair, for whatever reason, though this match ended nicely.
It's good to see Bliss pulling off Twisted Bliss again, and apparently healthy.
  • (c) Becky Lynch def. Natalya (Submission Match) - Retains Raw Women's Championship - Grade A-
This was the first REALLY good match of the evening. We saw excellent storytelling from the performers and WWE Creative. Lynch ultimately made Natty tap out to the Dis-Arm-Her, but the steps to getting to the finish were great.
We saw a bit of move-thief action when Lynch slapped on the sharpshooter, and the Canadian crowd gave her heat for it.
Ultimately, the climax was justified and I have no major complaints about the pace or any of the spots.
Goldberg def. Dolph Ziggler - Grade F
There was nothing good about this bout.
It was an elongated squash match with an ending that appeared to be built to waste time, while simultaneously rebuilding Goldberg's reputation after the debacle with the Undertaker at Super Show Down earlier this year.
I had an unpleasant look on my face throughout this entire segment.
(c) AJ Styles def. Ricochet - Retains U.S. Championship - Grade B+

Both Styles and Ricochet are too good at their jobs to have a bad match, but this was one of the least exciting of their clashes. It began with Ricochet's bizarre in-ring attire.
He looked like an unmasked Batman sidekick.
While that wasn't ideal, the finishing maneuver nearly made up for it all. AJ caught Ricochet in mid air during an attempted hurricarana from the top tope, and turned it into a Style Clash for the win.

It was one of the best moves of the night.
  • (c) Bayley def. Ember Moon - Retains Smackdown Women's Championship - Grade C
I was rooting for Bayley and Ember to put on a good show, but unfortunately they lost me and the crowd in this one.
The fans at Scotiabank Arena were most quiet during this match, and I understood their disinterest.
  • Kevin Owens def. Shane McMahon - Grade A
  • Charlotte Flair def. Trish Stratus - Grade B+
  • (c) Kofi Kingston vs. Randy Orton - Double Count Out - WWE Championship - Grade
  • The Fiend def. Finn Balor - Grade A+
